• Kasparov said authorities did not explicitly tell him that he was a target of an alleged assassination plot.

• Reports said Kasparov received enhanced protection over the summer for the first time since moving to the United States.

• Another Russian opposition figure, Ilya Ponomarev, was reportedly warned about the alleged plot but has not confirmed this.

• The US Justice Department recently charged five people allegedly involved in a Russian intelligence-linked global assassination network.

• Prosecutors allege the network plotted attacks and murders targeting Russian dissidents and defectors, including inside the United States.

• US authorities said the alleged network has operated since at least 2024 and attempted to recruit people to conduct killings.

• All five people charged over the alleged plots remain at large, according to the Justice Department.

• The Kremlin said it would not comment on the charges without what it described as credible evidence or tangible facts.

Why this matters: US prosecutors allege a Russian intelligence-linked network sought to conduct attacks against Kremlin opponents across multiple countries.
