  • The leader of Reform UK travelled to the Maldives with supplies intended for four Chagossians.

  • The four Chagossians are attempting to establish a permanent base on a deserted island in the Chagos archipelago.

  • Farage arranged for a boat carrying food and medical supplies to travel to the island.

  • The island is located approximately 300 miles south of the Maldives.

  • Farage did not board the vessel due to reported threats, mechanical issues, and UK authorities’ insistence that only trained crew be on board.

  • The sea journey to the island was expected to take approximately 24 hours.

  • Farage returned to the UK while the boat departed without him.

  • Farage stated that a senior source within the Maldives government informed him that British authorities wanted to prevent him from setting foot on Île du Coin.

  • Farage claimed the British Government asked the Maldives government to stop him from leaving and boarding the boat.

  • Farage described the trip as a humanitarian mission and stated he did not want his presence to jeopardize it.

  • Approximately 2,000 Chagossians were forcibly removed from the archipelago during the late 1960s and early 1970s to facilitate the establishment of a military base.

  • The military base was established on Diego Garcia.

  • The Chagos Islands are currently administered by the UK as the British Indian Ocean Territory.

  • The UK signed a treaty to transfer sovereignty of the territory to Mauritius.

  • The agreement is projected to cost the UK £35 billion over 100 years.

  • The UK will lease back Diego Garcia for 99 years under the deal.

  • The average annual lease cost is approximately £101 million.

  • Additional development funding for Mauritius forms part of the agreement.

  • Mauritius is reported to be facing a budget crisis.

  • The UK Government acknowledged that opposition from the United States could affect the implementation of the deal.

  • Donald Trump has publicly questioned the agreement.

  • Trump stated that the land “should not be taken away from the UK.”

  • The United States government officially backed transferring sovereignty of the territory to Mauritius.

  • The agreement was first announced in May of the previous year.

  • Keir Starmer has stated that the deal is necessary to secure the continued operation of the military base.

  • Diego Garcia is the largest island in the Chagos archipelago.

  • Diego Garcia is operated as a joint military base by UK and US armed forces.

  • Farage stated that search boats had been deployed in relation to his presence in the region.
