Summary:

- A delegation of European diplomats was attacked by masked Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank village of Taybeh.

- The delegation included representatives from Belgium, France, Poland and the Catholic Church.

- Diplomats were visiting Taybeh to assess repeated settler attacks against Palestinian communities during the olive harvest.

- Belgian authorities reported that a consular vehicle was damaged and a French mayor was assaulted.

- French mayor Bernard Baudoux said settlers kicked him, struck him with iron bars and knocked him to the ground.

- Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot condemned the attack and demanded that Israeli authorities bring those responsible to justice.

- Belgium reiterated its support for European Union sanctions against violent settlers and those supporting them.

- Israel's military and foreign minister condemned the violence, with authorities launching an investigation into the incident.

- Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office questioned whether available footage established responsibility and suggested reports could be politically motivated.

- The incident followed another settler attack that injured Palestinians and an American journalist in a separate West Bank village.

Why this matters: The attack raises concerns about the safety of diplomats, journalists and Palestinian civilians in the occupied West Bank. It could also increase diplomatic pressure on Israel to address settler violence and strengthen protections for communities during the olive harvest.

What’s next: Israeli police and military authorities are investigating the incident and attempting to identify those responsible. Belgium is expected to continue pressing for EU sanctions against individuals involved in settler violence, while European governments await the investigation's findings.
